2026/27 SEASON JUST ANNOUNCED!

On October 7, 2025, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra announces its lineup for the 2026/27 season.

80th Anniversary × New Music Director Lorenzo Viotti Appointed
In 2026, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) will celebrate its 80th anniversary. In this memorable year, Lorenzo Viotti will become the 4th Music Director.

Mr. Viotti will conduct a total of 7 programs and 11 performances in the 2026/27 season. At the Inaugural Concert (May 2026), he will lead the orchestra with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, which was featured in our first regular concert in 1947, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, a significant composer in his repertoire, embarking on a new musical journey with the orchestra.

Furthermore, as a new chapter with the new Music Director and the orchestra, the program will include works that showcase the orchestra’s skill and expressiveness, such as Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, presenting a diverse program that merges Mr. Viotti’s musical vision with the Orchestra’s ensemble prowess.

80th Anniversary Concert: F. Schmidt : Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln
In September 2026, as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations, Mr. Viotti and the orchestra will perform Franz Schmidt’s oratorio Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln, which was first performed in Japan by TSO in 1977. Based on the New Testament’s Book of Revelation, this work grandly depicts the end of the world and judgment, evoking various crises faced by modern society and posing profound questions.

80 Years of Progress and Moving Toward the Next Era
Throughout its 80-year journey, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra has overcome numerous challenges, continuously preserving the flame of music. As we reach this significant milestone of our 80th anniversary, all members of the orchestra are committed to building on our history and moving forward powerfully into the next era.

Renowned Conductors Illuminate the 80th Anniversary
TSO will celebrate its Laureate Conductor, Hubert Soudant for his 80th birthday in Novemeber 2025. In addition to Honorary Guest Conductor Naoto Otomo, guest conductors include Pablo Heras-Casado, Osmo Vänskä, Nodoka Okisawa, Pierre Bleuse, Tatsuya Shimono (in order of appearance in subscription Concerts), Daichi Deguchi, Motonori Kobayashi (in order of appearance in Kawasaki Subscription Concerts), Eiji Oue, David Reiland, Junichi Hirokami, Tsuyoshi Oiwa, Ryusuke Numajiri (in order of appearance in the Tokyo Opera City series), Yuu Kumakura, Shun Ooi, and Erika Kiko (in order of appearance in the Masterpiece Cassics).
