1958年東京生まれ。桐朋学園大学を卒業。指揮を小澤征爾、秋山和慶、尾高忠明、岡部守弘各氏に師事した。タングルウッド音楽祭において、A.プレヴィン、L.バーンスタイン、I.マルケヴィッチからも指導を受ける。桐朋学園大学在学中からNHK交響楽団の指揮研究員となり、22歳で楽団推薦により同団を指揮してデビュー。以来、国内の主要オーケストラに定期的に客演するほか、日本フィルハーモニー交響楽団正指揮者、大阪フィルハーモニー交響楽団指揮者、東京交響楽団正指揮者および常任指揮者、京都市交響楽団首席指揮者および常任指揮者兼アーティスティック・アドバイザーを経て、現在、群馬交響楽団音楽監督、東京交響楽団名誉客演指揮者、京都市交響楽団桂冠指揮者、琉球交響楽団音楽監督。また、2004年から8年間にわたり、東京文化会館の初代音楽監督を務めた。この間ほかにも1986年大阪フィルとのヨーロッパ・ツアー、1992年東響との東南アジア・ツアー、1994年ポルトガル公演、1996年、2001年ヨーロッパ・ツアーなどでも絶賛を博している。

海外のオーケストラにも客演。コロラド交響楽団、インディアナポリス交響楽団、ロイヤル・ストックホルム・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団などに招かれ、2001年7月に、フィルハーモニア管弦楽団の日本ツアーで同団を指揮、2012年3月にハワイ交響楽団のオープニングコンサートを指揮、以降定期的に客演しており、同年6月にはロレーヌ国立管弦楽団の定期公演に客演、絶賛された。2013年にはエネスク国際音楽祭に招かれ「弦楽八重奏 op.7」を演奏。〝繰り返し演奏されているが、今回の演奏は最高の演奏"〝日本のオーケストラ演奏が西洋音楽への新しい希望を見出した"と評され、欧米での活躍にも大きな期待が寄せられている。

数多くのソリストと共演しており、例えばヴァイオリンのG.シャハム、A.デュメイ、F.P.ツィンマーマン、J.ベル、J-J.カントロフ、S.ミンツ、ヴィオラのG.コセ、Y.バシュメット、チェロのM.ブルネロ、D.ゲリンガス、ピアノのR.ルプー、A.ワッツ、B.L.ゲルバー、I.モラヴェッツ、J.-Y.ティボーデ、C.カツァリス、J.-F.コラール、C.オルティーズ、H.グリモーらがいる。J.カレーラスのサポートでも絶賛を博した。常に多くのアーティストから再び共演を請われている。

オペラにも力を入れており、1988年、日生劇場における《魔弾の射手》でのオペラデビュー以来、《オルフェオとエウリディーチェ》《リゴレット》《魔笛》《忠臣蔵》などを指揮し、高く評価されている。

2006年には、2月に新国立劇場でのオペラ《愛怨》(作曲:三木稔、台本:瀬戸内寂聴)を東響と共演で指揮、6月に東響と京響の合同演奏で、東京・京都の両都市でシェーンベルク:「グレの歌」を指揮。特に2006年8月イタリアで開かれたプッチーニ音楽祭では三枝成彰作曲オペラ《Jr.バタフライ》(2014年にも同音楽祭で再演)や、2013年1月には同作曲家のオペラ《KAMIKAZE-神風-》の世界初演、そして2014年1月には千住明作曲新作オペラ《滝の白糸》を指揮し、大きな話題となった。

また、東響定期演奏会で黛敏郎《古事記》、エルガー《神の国》《使徒たち》《ゲロンティアスの夢》を指揮、2011年の東京文化会館50周年記念フェスティバル記念オペラでは、黛敏郎《古事記》の日本初の舞台上演をし、大きな話題を呼ぶとともに、高く評価された。

レパートリーは幅広く古典から現代音楽に及び、20歳の時の初レコーディング以来数多くのCDがリリースされている。最新作は、東京交響楽団との共演で『ホルスト:組曲「惑星」』がキングレコードよりリリースされている。

クラシックと他のジャンルとのコラボレーションによる新たな音楽シーンを発信しており、既成のジャンルや表現形式に捉われない新しい形の舞台芸術をプロデュースするなど、音楽プロデューサーとしても新しい音楽シーンを牽引している。

近年では教育的活動にも力を注ぎ、国際音楽セミナー「ミュージック・マスターズ・コース・ジャパン」を盟友である指揮者A.ギルバートと毎年開催するなど、活発な活動を行っている。

第8回渡邊暁雄音楽基金音楽賞(2000年)、第7回齋藤秀雄メモリアル基金賞(2008年)を受賞。

Naoto Otomo Honorary Guest Conductor

Graduated from Toho Gakuen School of Music. Studied under Seiji Ozawa, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Tadaaki Otaka and Morihiro Okabe. While still being a student of the Toho Gakuen, he entered NHK Symphony Orchestra and had his debut with the orchestra at 22. Now Otomo is Honorary Guest Conductor of Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Laureate of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra. Also Otomo was the first Music Director of Tokyo Bunka Kaikan for 8 years (2004-2012). He also has become Music Director of Gunma Symphony Orchestra from April 2013. He led several successful Europe tours, such as with Osaka Philharmonic in 1986 and with Tokyo Symphony Orchestra in 2001.

Otomo also appeared as a guest conductor in foreign orchestras such as Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and is a highly expected conductor in the West also. Otomo was on tour with Philharmonia Orchestra on July 2001, and performed on the opening concert of Hawaii Symphony Orchestra in 2012.

Otomo made his opera debut in November 1988 with Weber's Freischutz to the enthusiastic acclaim of press and audiences alike. Following this triumph, he continued with a succession of opera productions including Orfeo and Euridice, Rigoletto, The Magic Flute, Chushingura, that were as well highly acclaimed. He conducted Shigeaki Saegusa's Jr. Butterfly during Festival Puccini in Italy, July 2006.

Otomo's repertoire is vast and includes as classical as contemporary music. He did his first recording in his 20s, and continues to release CDs. One of his most recent works is Holst's The Planets that was released by King Records and was in the spotlight.

Otomo is a creator of a new music scene where classical music and music of other genres collaborate. He was a producer of popular music concerts in the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan - a hall where usually only classical music concerts are hold, or produced concerts that was not caught into the frame of existing genres or ways of expression, thus being a new kind of a music producer.

Recently Naoto Otomo has started his teaching activity, organizing `Subscription concerts for children`. Also every year he organizes international music seminar `Music Masters Course Japan` together with his fellow conductor Alan Gilbert.

Naoto Otomo received 8th Akio Watanabe Music Foundation Award in 2000 and 7th Hideo Saito Memorial Fund Award in 2008.
